“We are like mammoths, heavy and ancient – but also like UFOs, mysterious and futuristic” – Ufomammut
That about sum’s up Ufomammut’s 2008 release, Idolum.  Like a wooly mammoth driving a flying saucer and stomping your prehistoric brains out.  After a serious addiction to Electric Wizard, and firmly believing that no other doom metal could ever come close to the sheer illegal-substance-infused crushing heaviness of Dopethrone – I’m happy to report that after hearing only the first track of Idolum,Stigma – that theory has been firmly mammoth-stomped.

The album is very drone-y, but it isn’t that kind of put-me-to-sleep-sunn-o))) drone.  It’s a consistent and heavy driving force that you could listen to on repeat for hours and not realize it.  You will quickly find yourself slowly bobbing your head and getting into it in front of your coworkers, it’s that good.

Though, there are some slower, skippable parts of the album – around the middle of the album (Ammonia) it starts to get trippy and when I realize I’ve listened to some Pink Floyd esque wailing female vocals for 5 minutes I reach for the NEXT button to continue to brutality.   Sticking to the ‘UFO’ in their name, the songs are also filled with lots of crazzzzzzeeeeeey futuristic space effects.  Sometimes they’re annoying, sometimes you don’t even notice them, either way I think they could do fine without them.  I have no fucking idea what they’re singing about on this album, I don’t actually care to know.  I imagine they’re singing about mammoths, UFOs, or space age mammoths that fly UFOs.  Which is totally fucking metal in my book.
