Top Metal Albums of All-Time
I recently read three “best metal albums of all-time” lists on different websites and was surprised at how similar they were. This is something so overtly subjective and wrought with personal bias I assumed there’d be little consensus.

They all have at #1 Metallica Master of Puppets and are very similar throughout.
Since metalheads are an opinionated bunch, in the comments for this post let’s discuss these lists, and our own. Any glaring omissions, any band getting more credit than they deserve?
These sites are all full of idiots. First of all, Justice is way better than Puppets. Secondly, why the hell is Opeth as number 3?!?! WTF to the fullest extreme there.
AND I still stand by my word that South of Heaven is better than Reign of Blood.
For me, as far as best Metallica album, it’s a toss up between Puppets and Justice.
I have no idea why Opeth is in there, I like them, but certainly not at #3.
And agreed, South of Heaven is better than Reign in Blood. My 2 fave Slayer albums are South and Seasons, both of which I think would be in the Top 10.
The glaring omission in these lists is Suicidal Tendencies. Still Cyco After All These Years is stellar and deserves a spot in the top 20 at least.
And where’s Carcass?!? I’d also have Morbid Angel Formulas Fatal to the Flesh somewhere in the top 100. And what about Danzig?
if your balls are from the 80′s then the first list has got you covered. otherwise….. its a pretty shitty list.
Terrie makes a good point. These lists are full albums that came out in the 80s. So were no classic metal albums made in the 90s or 2000s?
I’d say that there have been classic albums made more recently; they just haven’t had time to be viewed as classic yet.
Some possibilities: Between the Buried and Me Alaska, Acid Bath When the Kite String Pops, Old Man’s Child In Defiance of Existence, the aforementioned Carcass and Danzig…
